United Nations Security Council Resolution 1541 – Western Sahara

Resolution 1541 (2004)

The Security Council,

Recalling all its previous resolutions on Western Sahara, and reaffirming, inparticular, resolution 1495 (2003) of 31 July 2003,

Reaffirming its commitment to assist the parties to achieve a just, lasting andmutually acceptable political solution, which will provide for the self-determinationof the people of Western Sahara in the context of arrangements consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations, and noting the role andresponsibilities of the parties in this respect,

Having considered the report of the Secretary-General of 23 April 2004(S/2004/325),

1. Reaffirms its support for the Peace Plan for Self-Determination of thePeople of Western Sahara as an optimum political solution on the basis of agreementbetween the two parties;

2. Reaffirms also its strong support for the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in order to achieve a mutually acceptable political solution to the dispute over Western Sahara;

3. Calls upon all the parties and the States of the region to cooperate fullywith the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy;

4. Decides to extend the mandate of the United Nations Mission for theReferendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) until 31 October 2004;

5. Requests that the Secretary-General provide a report on the situationbefore the end of the present mandate and requests the Secretary-General to includein this report an evaluation of the mission size necessary for MINURSO to carry outits mandated tasks, with a view towards its possible reduction;

6. Decides to remain seized of the matter.
