United Nations Security Council Resolution 2479 –Reports of the Secretary-General on the Sudan and South Sudan

Resolution 2479 (2019)

The Security Council,

Reaffirming all its previous resolutions and presidential statements concerning the situation in Sudan and underlining the importance of full compliance with and implementation of these,

Reaffirming its strong commitment to the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Sudan,

Taking note of the Special Report of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Secretary-General of the United Nations (S/2019/445),

Determining that the situation in Sudan constitutes a threat to international peace and security,

Acting under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations,

1. Decides to extend until 31 October 2019 the mandate of the African Union-United Nations Mission Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID);

2. Decides that UNAMID should continue to implement its mandate as set out in resolution 2429 (2018), and further decides to extend, temporarily and exceptionally, the period of drawdown for UNAMID’s military personnel outlined in paragraph 5 of resolution 2429 (2018), in order to maintain the Mission’s self-protection capacities;

3. Requests the Secretary-General to provide the Security Council with an oral update 60 days after the adoption of this resolution on the situation on the ground, and further requests the Secretary-General and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to provide the Security Council with a Special Report no later than 30 September 2019, on the following:

(i) an assessment of the situation on the ground and recommendations on the appropriate course of action regarding the drawdown of UNAMID;

(ii) a joint African Union-United Nations political strategy detailing options for a follow-on mechanism to UNAMID;

4. Decides to remain seized of the matter.
